My daughter, unfortunately, came to Providence due to alcoholism. She is deep into her addiction to alcohol. Addiction is something we as Oregonians see a lot. With that comes a lot of judgment and stereotyping.

I have seen it in how my daughter has been treated in the past at other hospitals, but I have also felt the judgmental and uncompassionate treatment myself just by being in the same room as my daughter. Not Joyce! She was amazing from her first contact. She generally seemed to care about my daughter. She went out of her way to help my daughter feel herself again.

She gave my daughter her dignity back. So much so that my beaten-down, depressed daughter looked at me and said, "Why is she so nice to me?" My daughter has such a battle ahead of her, but she will leave this hospital with so much more than she came with, which has nothing to do with her from a medical standpoint.
