We were so lucky to have Jerry as a primary nurse on my sister's radiation oncology treatment team at the Duke Cancer Center- North Durham. Jerry was a consistent pillar of calm, compassion, strength, and sincerity. He knew that there would be days when she would feel playful and that there would be days when she might be down. He was always able to pivot his demeanor to what my sister needed as a patient; never compromising quality of care, attentiveness, or compassion. Every day for 8 weeks with Jerry, we never knew if he was having a bad day. He was always consistent, lovely, and caring. It wasn't until after Jerry was with us, as my sister rang the bell, that we found out that he was the treatment nurse for a family friend who, unfortunately, lost her battle with colon cancer several years ago. I'm so grateful that nurses like Jerry find the strength to compartmentalize with compassion and sincerity so that they can be there for patients (like my sister) and family (like me). I'll forever be grateful for Jerry's presence and support on my sister’s journey to cancer survivor.
