Abby was able to be with the patient and their family as she passed peacefully in her mother's arms.
There are times in the ICU when our jobs feel like firefighters, you see the flames erupting, and you know the only way to help might burn you. While these flames are not true flames and the burns don't leave physical scars, the emotional heat these situations create sticks with you forever. I am writing this DAISY Award nomination for one heck of a firefighter, Abby Suholaski. Recently, Abby made the self-sacrificing decision to care for one of our very sick patients in the ICU. This patient was small, and the odds were very much against this little fighter. Nevertheless, Abby decided to commit to this family, being there for them for the majority of her shifts. Recently, this patient made a significant decline and unfortunately Abby was out of town, knowing the tenuous state of the patient, Abby left a message with unit leadership for the family. What the note said is between Abby and the parents, but they were moved to tears by her kind words. They told the bedside nurse, "I just wish Abby was here, no matter what was going on, [the patient] always lit up when they saw Abby, and we knew everything was going to be ok." Despite all signs showing that the patient was going to pass, she stayed alive long enough that Abby was able to return home and head straight from the airport to the hospital. Abby was able to be with the patient and their family as she passed peacefully in her mother's arms. The flames of emotional trauma can be hot and scarring, and this is not the first time Abby has been involved in a situation such as this one. However, she marched forward directly into those flames, knowing what the end result could have been. I am incredibly lucky to work with Abby and the caliber of nurse she represents. This is why she deserves the DAISY Award.
