That night was filled with fear and uncertainty, and from the moment Tom entered the room, his presence brought a sense of calm and safety.
I am honored to nominate Tom Ravenscraft for a DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary compassion, kindness, and humanity he showed my mom and our family during one of the most painful times of our lives. My mom was cared for by Tom in the Emergency Room. That night was filled with fear and uncertainty, and from the moment Tom entered the room, his presence brought a sense of calm and safety. He treated my mom with such gentleness, dignity, and respect, speaking to her kindly and making sure she was comfortable. Even in the chaos of the ER, Thomas never made us feel rushed or overlooked. He cared for my mom not just as a patient, but as a person. That night, when my mom was being moved to the ICU, she told me that Tom had said to her, “I’ll come check on you tomorrow.” That small promise meant everything to her. Unfortunately, my mom did not live to see Tom again.
After my mom had passed, I turned around and saw Thomas. In that moment, when my world felt like it had completely fallen apart, the relief and comfort I felt seeing him is something I will never forget. His presence alone brought peace during the most devastating moment of my life. It felt as though he had kept his promise to her in the only way he could. Tom chose to come and be there after her passing, and that act of compassion meant more to our family than words can express. He handled my mom with such tenderness and respect, and the care he showed her—even after death—brought us a sense of comfort and dignity when we needed it most. Tom went far beyond his role as a nurse. He showed up not only as a medical professional but as a deeply compassionate human being. Because of him, my mom was treated with dignity both in life and after death, and our family felt supported during our most vulnerable moments. Nurse Tom truly embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. His kindness, empathy, and selflessness left a lasting and unforgettable impact on our family, and we will carry his compassion with us for the rest of our lives.
