I would like to nominate Emily Lowery for the DAISY Award in recognition of her unwavering dedication, compassion, and advocacy that truly changed and ultimately saved the life of one of our students. Nurse Emily noticed that a student appeared to be struggling with persistent and concerning health issues. While others may have overlooked the signs or considered them outside the scope of their responsibilities, Nurse Emily acted. She immediately began monitoring the student more closely and reached out to ensure they were getting proper medical attention. When it became clear that the student was not receiving the care they desperately needed, Nurse Emily stepped up. Not once, not temporarily, but consistently and tirelessly.

She made home visits to check on the student, encouraged and supported them in attending school, informed the proper agencies, and maintained open, regular communication with healthcare providers and the student’s family. Her advocacy didn’t stop at the school doors; she became a lifeline for the student during an incredibly difficult time. Her persistence and care paid off.

Due to Nurse Emily’s tireless efforts, the student was finally seen by the appropriate medical specialists. It was discovered that they required multiple life-saving surgeries, including an organ transplant. Today, that student is thriving, alive and well, in large part because of the early recognition, follow-through, and never-give-up attitude of this incredible nurse.
