Her timely intervention prevented what could have been a fatal outcome.
I am honored to recognize Emily Eckert, RN, for her exceptional leadership and commitment to patient care in the Radiation Oncology Department.

Emily's role spans the care of both pediatric patients and women with gynecologic cancers, and she consistently demonstrates a unique ability to meet patients and families where they are, with warmth, creativity, and empathy. For our youngest patients, Emily goes above and beyond: she creates personalized artwork in the exam rooms to welcome new children starting treatment and to celebrate milestones for those completing their therapy. Her demeanor and actions help reduce fear and bring joy to children and their families during one of the hardest times of their lives.

In addition to her direct patient care, Emily has embraced a new leadership role as a procedure nurse for gynecologic brachytherapy. Over the past year, she has not only developed expertise in this highly specialized area but has also taken the initiative to educate and mentor other nurses on how to safely and effectively assist with these procedures. Her efforts have expanded team capability, improved efficiency, and enhanced patient safety during complex treatments.

Emily's leadership was most evident on a day in September when her clinical vigilance and advocacy saved a patient's life. Emily contacted a care facility to confirm details of a patient's upcoming procedure. During this call, Emily learned from the facility's nurse manager that the patient had been experiencing bleeding. For a woman with cervical cancer, such bleeding can quickly become life-threatening. Recognizing the urgency, Emily asked careful questions about the amount, duration, and severity of the bleeding. Although she was met with dismissive and unhelpful responses, she did not allow this to deter her. Emily relied on her clinical experience and recommended that the patient be transferred immediately to the emergency department. Upon arrival, the patient was found to have a hemoglobin of 3.4 g/dL and a platelet count below 2,000/uL. Her timely intervention prevented what could have been a fatal outcome.

These examples represent only a fraction of the exceptional leadership and patient-centered care that Emily consistently demonstrates. Emily embodies the qualities of a nurse leader: she models excellence in clinical care, mentors her colleagues, advocates tirelessly for patients, and inspires confidence in both patients and the care team.
