During a recent clinic visit, a patient came in with her husband for a follow-up appointment after a D&C due to pregnancy loss. She was added for an ultrasound during her visit. While in the ultrasound room, the patient suddenly began to haemorrhage heavily. Our sonographer, Mandy, immediately called for assistance, and Nurse Carrie Mills responded without hesitation.

Carrie quickly assessed the situation, staying calm and composed while reassuring both the patient and her husband. She maintained open, compassionate communication throughout, explaining what was happening and what steps were being taken to help. Carrie immediately recommended contacting emergency services and worked efficiently with the provider and staff to ensure the patient received timely care.

While awaiting EMS arrival, Carrie continued to provide hands-on support—comforting the patient, helping manage the bleeding, and ensuring the environment remained as calm and safe as possible. She also assisted in cleaning the room and maintaining the patient’s dignity during a very distressing situation. When EMS arrived, Carrie gave a clear and thorough report to the paramedics, ensuring a smooth handoff of care. Her quick thinking, professionalism, and compassion were instrumental in stabilizing a critical situation and supporting a patient experiencing both physical and emotional trauma.

Carrie exemplified the true spirit of nursing through her clinical excellence, calm presence, and compassionate care. She went above and beyond for her patient and her team that day.
