An elderly patient who has severe dementia was admitted to the hospital. The problem is compounded by her husband also having significant memory loss as well. They do not have any family in the area.

The patient was admitted to NJS for a SDH after she fell. Her husband of 55 years did not want to leave his wife. There was concern that he wasn’t safe to drive home. The spouse voiced frustration from a previous admission 2 years ago. Tonya listened to his concerns with empathy. Then he was upset that he had nothing to eat. Tonya went to the cafeteria and purchased supper for him with her own money.

The following day, Tonya reached out to their neighbors and had them come to the hospital so they could follow the spouse, ensuring that he got home safely. The husband attempted to come back to the hospital but got lost along the way. He called his granddaughter, who then called Tonya.

Tonya went to Costco, where he was lost, and had him follow her back to the hospital. Tonya went above and beyond to care for the patient and her spouse, and tried to set up a safe discharge plan. She has shown such compassion and caring and demonstrated the "Love Me" standard that is absolutely inspiring to see.
