In a hospital setting where fear and pain can be overwhelming, Jocelyn created safety, comfort, and connection.
I am nominating Nurse Jocelyn Aguirre for the DAISY Award because she provided extraordinary, truly above-and-beyond care to my 94-year-old grandmother during one of the most frightening times of her life. My grandmother is blind, in severe pain from an L1 fracture, and was understandably scared while waiting for a postponed surgery. From the moment Jocelyn walked into the room, she treated my grandmother with such gentleness, dignity, and compassion that her entire demeanor changed.

Jocelyn’s presence alone eased her fear. What makes Jocelyn exceptional is her unmatched attentiveness. She didn’t just do her checks; she was thorough. She noticed even the smallest details, like the swelling in my grandmother’s shoulder and how she held her body due to pain. She didn’t want to miss anything that might impact her comfort or care, and as a family member, that meant everything. When the surgery was postponed, Jocelyn was the one who broke the news. She did it with honesty, professionalism, and such kindness that my grandmother accepted it without fear. Jocelyn sat with her, reassured her, and made sure she understood what was happening in a way that respected both her blindness and her emotional vulnerability.

And then there was the moment that showed Jocelyn’s heart: she made sure my grandmother received her “magic cup” milkshake, something small, but something that brought her comfort and joy in a place that can feel overwhelming. That simple act made my grandmother feel cared for as a person, not just a patient. Jocelyn listened, advocated, anticipated needs before we could even voice them, and treated my grandmother as if she were her own family. In a hospital setting where fear and pain can be overwhelming, Jocelyn created safety, comfort, and connection. She embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. Our family will never forget the way she cared for my grandmother with skill, compassion, thoroughness, and genuine humanity. Jocelyn truly went above and beyond.
