The way she cares for the individuals we serve, supports their families, and uplifts her teammates is inspiring.
For over 4 years, Shay Dearchs has been the “go-to” person not only for my daughter, but also for my family. She is dedicated to her craft, knowledgeable, and the best advocate for our child that we could ever have. My family spent many nights in the Emergency Room and the hospital, and Shay was by our side. She has never been afraid to ask the doctors questions, but always in a professional manner. She fought for our child as if she were her own.

My daughter loved Shay. Many times, when I was returning her to the medical group home, she would ask the staff, "Is Shay working?" If the answer was yes, she would be very excited! Shay and my daughter had a special bond.

It’s with so much gratitude and admiration that I nominate Shay Dearchs for the Daisy Award. Shay is one of those rare nurses who brings not only skill and knowledge to her work, but also a deep sense of compassion, calm, and heart. Her recent care for one of our residents is a beautiful example of the kind of nurse and person Shay is every single day.

Throughout the many ups and downs of this resident’s terminal diagnosis, Shay was a constant source of strength and comfort for both the individual and their family. She was there through it all, attending appointments, ER visits, and care team meetings, always showing up with a steady presence and a kind heart. Her ability to bring peace during incredibly difficult moments, while also ensuring the best possible care, was nothing short of extraordinary.

What really stands out about Shay is how fully she gives of herself. She worked long hours, came in during the night when needed, and never hesitated to be there when it mattered most. Whether it was sitting in a waiting room, helping navigate a tough decision, or just being a familiar face during a hard moment, Shay was there. She made sure the family had access to the right specialists and support, always focused on helping this resident feel safe, cared for, and surrounded by love.

The connection Shay built with this resident and her family was incredibly special. When they made the transition to hospice care at home, this resident asked for Shay to come say goodbye. That simple request says so much about the trust and bond they shared. Since this resident’s passing, her family has shared again and again how much they loved Shay and how grateful they are for everything she did. Shay didn’t just care for her. She cared for her whole family, and she did it with grace, empathy, and so much heart.

Shay truly lives out our mission to partner with families to help children with special healthcare needs live a great life. She helped this resident live fully and meaningfully, right up to the very end. And she brings that same spirit to every individual and family she works with.

As her manager, I feel incredibly lucky to have Shay on our team. She leads by example in everything she does. The way she cares for the individuals we serve, supports their families, and uplifts her teammates is inspiring. Shay is a remarkable nurse, a trusted leader, and a deeply valued part of our team. Her compassion, dedication, and heart make a difference every single day.
