With the birth of our daughter, my wife had complications and had to go into surgery. This was our firstborn. All of a sudden, I am alone in the room holding my baby, covered in vernix, and I had hardly even held any babies prior. I have my daughter, my wife is in surgery, and I’m alone.

Naturally, I then got scared. What if something goes wrong during surgery? What if I’m alone with my daughter for the rest of my life? And more and more “what if’s…”

Not too long after, D’Kera came back into the room and spoke to me like it was just a normal day. Calm, collected, confident. I suppose this is like every day for her! But for me, this is the happiest, yet most scared I have probably ever been, and she was the only other person with me in that moment.

The way she carried herself and talked to me greatly helped ease my tensions. When I had questions, she answered them with confidence. When my wife came back into the room after a successful surgery, she joked with us and helped make the experience even better by knowing exactly what to do and doing it with confidence.

We pay a lot of money to be in there. Emotions are difficult to put a number on, but some would say priceless. Nurses like D’Kera can have a positive influence on that!
