Because of Douglas, my hospital experience was not defined solely by fear or pain, but by moments of comfort, dignity, and hope.
I am honored to nominate Douglas for the DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary compassion, dedication, and humanity he showed during my hospital stay, both to me as a patient and to my parents as they watched me go through an incredibly difficult time. From the moment Douglas entered my room, I felt a sense of calm that I had not felt in days. I was frightened, vulnerable, and overwhelmed, yet his gentle presence, reassuring words, and genuine concern immediately made me feel safe. He never made me feel rushed or overlooked. Instead, he took the time to truly listen to my fears, my questions, and even the things I struggled to put into words.
What sets Douglas apart is not only his clinical skill, but his ability to see the person behind the patient. He seemed to instinctively know what I needed before I even had to ask. Whether it was explaining my care in a way that eased my anxiety, advocating for me when something did not feel right, or simply offering encouragement during moments when I felt defeated, Douglas was always there. His compassion extended beyond me to my parents, who were understandably scared watching their child struggle. He spoke to them with kindness and patience, offering reassurance and clarity when emotions were high. That level of empathy meant more than he could ever know. Because of Douglas, my hospital experience was not defined solely by fear or pain, but by moments of comfort, dignity, and hope. He made one of the hardest times in my life more bearable, and his care played a meaningful role in my healing both physically and emotionally. Douglas exemplifies everything the DAISY Award represents. I will never forget the impact he had on my stay, and I am profoundly grateful for the care he gave so selflessly.
