After a long day in the Pediatric Oncology clinic, a newly diagnosed patient with leukemia became very weak and could not rise from his wheelchair. He was only 16 years old but weighed over 300 pounds. He was anemic and deteriorating. He and his grandmother were very worried. Despite her shift being over, Amber took charge. She tried to help the patient transfer him, and when he couldn't, she got a gait belt. It became apparent that he was not able to do it. Amber calmed him and comforted him. She made arrangements for his admission. Despite the late time and commitments at home, she cheerfully stayed with the family to provide comfort. She made hospital arrangements to organize his stay. She stayed with the family until he could be admitted. All in all, she stayed 1 3/4 hours past her shift. The family was so relieved, and she took away their anxiety. Amber truly helped this family in a meaningful way and demonstrated respect, care, and competence. I am not sure whether there was joy in having to stay late, but she always smiled and maintained a calm demeanor. For her excellent care, I believe Amber should receive the DAISY Award.
