Working alongside Elisa reminded me how fortunate we are to have nursing colleagues who go above and beyond the call of duty.
In my almost three years of working at UM, Elisa has become one of the nurses I will never forget. She had been caring for a patient on the floor for three consecutive nights and consistently noted significant elevations in the patient’s blood pressure, in the setting of a stroke history. Despite notifying the night covering physicians, the responses were passive, and the issue persisted. Elisa continued to advocate fiercely for her patient. She took it upon herself to perform a detailed medication reconciliation and identified multiple home antihypertensive medications the patient was no longer receiving. That same night, she reached out to night coverage again — this time with a clearly documented case for intervention. Together, she and I were able to adjust the patient’s medication regimen. From that point forward, we saw consistent improvement in the patient’s blood pressure until it fully stabilized over the next few days. Working alongside Elisa reminded me how fortunate we are to have nursing colleagues who go above and beyond the call of duty. Despite managing the needs of multiple patients, Elisa made this one feel as if she were the only one. She is deeply deserving of recognition — not only for her actions that night, but for all the quiet excellence she brings to every shift.
