I would like to recognize Kaitlyn Harwell, RN, for going the extra mile in showing compassion and care! On a Friday, an elderly patient came in for a TAVR procedure, expecting a minimally invasive procedure with discharge the next day. Soon after being sedated, prior to the start of the procedure, the patient coded and had to have his chest opened and emergent open-heart surgery.

The doctor went to speak to the patient's wife, who, of course, was very upset, overwhelmed, and did not understand what he was telling her. He stated that Kaitlyn Harwell, RN, went with him, and she re-explained everything to the wife in layman's terms and then proceeded to pray with her. The doctor said that he has witnessed many nurses interact with patients and families, but never anything as he witnessed with Kaitlyn. He said she was exceptionally amazing, caring and comforting to this family and wanted to make sure she was recognized.
