Hannah, I hope you know that when we tell the story of how we fought the hardest battle alongside our baby, we'll always speak highly of your kindness, your dedication, and the difference you made.
Our baby was diagnosed with HLHS at our 20-week anatomy scan. Our journey and battle began that very instant. Not knowing what was to come. It left our family in fear and wondering why our baby girl. At 34 weeks pregnant, we had to relocate from El Paso to Houston. Having to leave a two-year-old toddler back home just to give her baby sister a fighting chance. Later, during a doctor's appointment, things didn't go well. That same day I was admitted and had to be taken to OR for a C-section. We knew our long journey was about to kick off. Soon after I delivered, we learned our baby girl was no longer a candidate for her planned surgeries. After extensive testing and consideration over a week in the CICU, we were notified her heart was too weak and damaged to go down the transplant road as well. This completely broke our spirits as it was our only hope left for her. We now had calls and choices to make. Playing the waiting game, waiting for family to gather up funds to travel out to Houston and meet her before her time on earth was up. A feeling I wish no parent has to ever endure. That is when, one night, we met nurse Hannah Ramirez. Our warrior in scrubs. A lifeline when we were drowning. She carried herself with the kind of quiet authority that made you trust her instantly. She spoke with clarity, explaining things we struggled to grasp, giving us direction when we were lost in uncertainty. She was very attentive to all our needs. Showed me how to soothe my fragile baby and made us keepsakes that we will forever treasure. To put into words what she does not only for me but also for other children and parents is hard. She has gone out of her way. Hannah, I hope you know that when we tell the story of how we fought the hardest battle alongside our baby, we'll always speak highly of your kindness, your dedication, and the difference you made. Thank you for being the calm in our storm, for holding space we didn't even know we needed, for honesty in the face of uncertainty, dedication beyond measure. For shining brightly enough to let us navigate our darkest and scariest roads. For your extra time, you're above and beyond, and for answering the same questions a million times. You will always be part of our story. God bless you. I will always pray for you. You will be a great mother one day, I'm sure!
