I watched Brenda provide compassionate, dignified care until the very end of his life
From a young age, I knew I wanted to become a nurse. Growing up, I experienced trauma and personal struggles that shaped who I am today. Those experiences gave me a deep desire to help others, especially those who felt unheard or lacked the strength or voice to advocate for themselves. I wanted to be someone who could stand beside them during their most vulnerable moments. I was in nursing school during the COVID-19 pandemic and witnessed firsthand the extraordinary role nurses played at the bedside. When patients had no family present, nurses became their support system. They held patients' hands during moments of fear and uncertainty, and in many cases, they were present during patients' final moments. Although this was a tragic and emotionally challenging time for everyone, it solidified my passion for nursing and reaffirmed why I chose this profession. Recently, I had the opportunity to work alongside a nurse named Brenda, whose care for a patient had a profound impact on me. The patient had COVID-19 and was transitioning to comfort measures only. I watched Brenda provide compassionate, dignified care until the very end of his life.
When no family was present, she remained at his bedside, holding his hand and ensuring he was not alone as he took his final breath. That moment brought me back to the very reason I chose nursing to care for those who have no one else there for them. Brenda exemplifies the true values of nursing through her compassion, presence, and unwavering dedication to her patients. For these reasons, I would like to nominate Brenda for a DAISY Award. She consistently demonstrates what it means to be a nurse and continues to inspire those around her through her selfless care.
