I have never experienced such an expression of caring support from a leader.
In my 26 years as a frontline caregiver at two major healthcare organizations, I have met and worked with at least 30 managers and directors. I can easily say that Megan O'Huerta has given me back my faith that a leader can demonstrate both authentic personal integrity and professional excellence at the same time. She followed a highly popular and trusted MCH director in an interim role during a dynamic and challenging time, adding this position to her already existing leadership duties. She was thrown into the whirlwind of our department as we've navigated a wide range of issues—CIS, the TJC visit, staffing and breaks, locker space concerns, and the ongoing high patient volumes and acuity, and all this in the context of a specialized department with four distinct units and needs. Despite these challenges, I’ve seen her consistently give her best to support our managers, ANMs, and staff, as we faced emotional, professional, clinical, and economic challenges together. By taking on this additional responsibility, she not only shared her valuable expertise but also provided vital support to our leadership team. This transition period was critical, and her involvement was allowing us the time and space we would need to find a new director who would be a strong, long-term fit for our department. I am particularly impressed by how she manages to apply leadership knowledge in a department she is not familiar with - a sign of true leadership- to department, patient, and organizational needs while never forgetting to pay attention to her leaders and staff. At our last ANM meeting, she went out of her way to not only bring breakfast for all 12 members of the team but also find out what each one of us likes to have for breakfast, get it, and pack it in individually hand-decorated bags. I have never experienced such an expression of caring support from a leader. A colleague like her makes me try to give my best as well.
