I could go on and on, and it still would not be adequate to describe just how wonderful Carolyn is and the superb care she provided to her patients.
I had the honor and privilege of shadowing Carolyn as a local nursing student during my recent clinical rotation. Often, more times than I would like to admit, nurses can be rude, impatient, and treat nursing students as someone who is just in their way. I know nurses have a very stressful job and can often feel like the weight of the world is on their shoulders, but as someone who was once in my shoes, it absolutely blows my mind the lack of empathy that is often portrayed.
However, Carolyn was the complete opposite. She went above and beyond to help me feel welcomed and comfortable. She also took her time explaining concepts and skills that will be beneficial for my future and allowed me to practice my skills (she never once rushed me or belittled me in any way).
Carolyn was not only a great teacher but one of the most phenomenal and caring nurses I have ever encountered. Carolyn showed each of her patients compassion, empathy, and pure love. She took time to listen to each of her patients and their family, respecting their concerns, needs, questions and input.
During my time with Carolyn, we had a patient with an extensive list of medical issues. Carolyn went above and beyond to take care of that precious little girl to make her feel comfortable. What Carolyn did for that little girl, I can honestly say that I have never seen in a hospital setting or anywhere, for that matter.
She informed me that she planned to have a “spa day” for her patient. I was a little confused as to what she meant exactly, as I could not remember learning anything about a “spa day” in school. To my surprise, I learned that what Carolyn meant by “spa day” was just that; she had planned to take time out of her busy schedule to pamper her sweet little patient.
Carolyn postponed her meal break to give her patient a bath, including a gentle massage with calming lotion, changed all of her linens, gave her a fresh/clean gown, and even took the time to unbraid her hair and give her a new hairstyle, all while playing music for her patient. For most, it would have been so much easier to go on break or even look over this particular patient, as she is completely non-verbal and did not have any visitors during my time there.
I could go on and on, and it still would not be adequate to describe just how wonderful Carolyn is and the superb care she provided to her patients. Although I only had the one isolated interaction with Carolyn, I can tell she is the type of nurse who lights up the room when she walks in, one who loves her career with a big heart for her patients and their families.
I pray that when the day comes, when I'm on the floor in my new career as a nurse, I can be a “Carolyn” for my patients and their families.
