This charge nurse was one of my mom's last caregivers. On her last day of life, while in hospice care, this nurse came into the room to administer her pain meds, and the first thing he asked was, "So, what did she do?" I was so surprised and taken aback. My mom had been in and out of the hospital and a rehab facility for the past 27 days, and no other caregiver had inquired about this. This interaction left a lasting impression on me. It tells me that this nurse was treating the person, not just the patient, which I think is rare. He then went on to ask who we were in the room and then asked about her comfort and current med protocol.

Next, he asked about our needs and requested a fresh Comfort Cart for the room. This nurse is a rare blend of commitment, compassion, and professionalism. He's efficient and precise without being hasty or rushed. And all the while, maintaining a calm, open demeanor. This nurse had mentioned he was in his 17th year of his profession. I wholeheartedly hope that this nurse receives recognition. He is an invaluable asset to any team or institution. My mom passed away a few hours later, and while my interaction was brief with this nurse, I will always remember him as part of her last few hours of life.
