Candace's ability to balance clinical excellence with profound empathy exemplifies the highest standards of nursing.
I am writing to nominate Candace for the DAISY Award in recognition of her extraordinary compassion and exceptional nursing care.
During her recent shift, Candace demonstrated the very essence of what it means to be a nurse. While caring for a full patient assignment, she encountered a new mother who was deeply distressed upon learning that her newborn required phototherapy. Rather than simply providing clinical information and moving on, Candace recognized the emotional crisis this mother was experiencing.
Candace took the time to sit with this frightened new mother, patiently explaining the phototherapy process in terms she could understand. She addressed each concern with gentle reassurance, helping the mother understand that jaundice is common and treatable. Most importantly, Candace stayed present with her—offering not just medical expertise, but genuine human comfort during one of the most vulnerable moments in this family's life.
What makes Candace's actions even more remarkable is that she provided this level of compassionate care while simultaneously managing her other patient responsibilities. She never made the mother feel rushed or like a burden. Instead, she created a space where this new parent felt heard, supported, and cared for during an overwhelming time.
Candace's ability to balance clinical excellence with profound empathy exemplifies the highest standards of nursing. She transformed what could have been a traumatic memory into an experience where this mother felt truly cared for by a nurse who went above and beyond.
Her actions that day made a lasting difference not just in the immediate situation, but in how this family will forever remember their hospital experience. Candace embodies the DAISY Award values.

Candace received the award on her Mom's birthday, who passed away in 2024. Her Mom was also a nurse who served at Fairview Hospital in the same Pediatric/Peds Psych Ward.
