When I was admitted, I was very irritated due to the tests showing one thing, and then that was not it. So I was very confused. Miss Shaneka came in, and I mean to tell you, everyone’s demeanor changed in the room. It was late and almost shift change, but she still came in, did her assessment, and provided great care until it was shift change.

I have worked in the medical field for over 20 years, and I know from experience that you are ready to run for the hills at shift change, but Shaneka was different. She stayed and made sure I was comfortable and wished me a blessed night. The next day, I happened to have Shaneka again. I loved it when it was time for my meds because that meant I would have her to chat with during med time and not feel so lonely when family members were not around. I was supposed to stay another night, but was discharged late that evening.

Shaneka had promised me that she would come say goodbye before she went home. It was after her shift, and I was wondering if I had missed her. This sweet and compassionate nurse stayed past her shift so she could discharge me and not put it on the night shift's list of things to do.  If I’m ever unfortunate enough to be a patient again, I pray that I have Shaneka as my nurse.
