Katie Hoyle is a one-of-a-kind Radiation Oncology nurse whose compassion, patient-centered care, and clinical excellence truly embody the spirit of the DAISY Award. She consistently treats every patient with dignity, respect, and empathy, ensuring they feel informed, supported, and safe throughout their care journey.
Katie is often the primary nurse in the clinic, yet each patient experiences her full attention. Her warm demeanor and calm presence immediately put patients at ease during what can be an overwhelming time. One patient recently shared that “Katie and Dr. R were very caring and took time to provide me with information concerning future radiation therapy.” This feedback reflects Katie’s commitment to education, communication, and ensuring patients feel empowered rather than anxious about their treatment.
Patients frequently ask for Katie when they have concerns because she is their consistent source of comfort—a reassuring presence that makes them feel at ease.
Her commitment to compassionate care and clear communication was evident during an initial encounter with a patient who later shared a detailed account of his experience:
"Katie came to the waiting area and escorted us to the exam room warmly. She was welcoming, personable, and approachable. She was patient and really listened (and clarified) while letting us explain history, experiences, and understanding of health/treatment needs. She educated us regarding radiation therapy, what to expect, and how to best be prepared. She noted and accommodated individual issues/needs to ensure success and understanding of treatment. She answered every question we had. She didn't rush us or minimize any question or detail that was important to us. Katie then accurately communicated all our information to Dr. R. We felt this team had uncommon communication and information-sharing practices in place that saved us from the 'dreaded' ordeal of repeating the same information over and over or hearing conflicting versions of what to expect. The team let us know that we were in the right place with all the right providers of care—who not only have the expertise we need for cancer treatment but, more importantly, have true compassion, clearly care about my dignity and lack of suffering, and are so balanced that Katie was able to share humor and joy at the same time.”
Katie takes the time to truly listen, clarify concerns, and provide thoughtful, individualized education. She explains radiation therapy in a clear, compassionate manner, answers every question thoroughly, and never rushes an interaction or minimizes patient concerns. Her communication with physicians is accurate and seamless, helping prevent confusion and reinforcing patient trust in their care team.
In addition to her exceptional compassion, Katie demonstrates outstanding nursing vigilance and patient advocacy. On one occasion, a patient casually mentioned experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath while arriving for treatment. When he attempted to downplay his symptoms, Katie insisted on performing a proper assessment. She identified concerning findings, including significantly elevated blood pressure and exertional chest pain. Despite the patient’s hesitation, Katie persistently advocated for emergency evaluation. Her insistence led the patient to be taken to the emergency department, where it was confirmed that he was actively having a heart attack. He was transported for advanced care and admitted for lifesaving treatment thanks to her diligence.
On another recent occasion, Katie was reviewing skin care with a patient when she noticed that alignment stickers used for daily treatments were placed in the center of the treatment field, making it extremely difficult for the patient to moisturize to reduce skin toxicity. Recognizing the impact on the patient’s comfort and care, Katie promptly raised concerns with the RTT manager. After reviewing the treatment field, adjustments were made to remove some of the stickers without compromising proper alignment, and allowed the patient to moisturize effectively and protect their skin throughout treatment. Katie’s proactive approach reflects her ongoing advocacy and thoughtful approach to what is in the best interest of patient care.
Katie’s actions reflect the heart of nursing—compassion paired with courage. She sees patients as whole people, not a diagnosis, and is unafraid to speak up when something does not seem right. Her presence, attention to detail, and unwavering advocacy consistently make a meaningful and sometimes lifesaving impact.
Katie Hoyle is profoundly deserving of the DAISY Award. She exemplifies patient‑centered, compassionate nursing in every interaction—both within the clinic and throughout her local community in Cleveland County. Katie is a remarkable nurse whose influence extends far beyond the walls of the clinic. She serves diligently on our service line's Professional Development Council, contributing to the success and advancement of fellow nurses within their specialty areas and career pathways.
In addition, Katie serves as co‑chair, now chair, of her departmental Professional Governance Council, where she drives meaningful change and leads impactful initiatives. One example includes her advocacy for a tram to circulate the campus parking lot to transport frail patients safely to and from their vehicles. She consistently thinks creatively to enhance patient care and improve teammate satisfaction.
Nursing is more than a profession for Katie—it is her passion. Her many examples of patient and team impact reflect her dedication, innovation, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
