Thank you, Joel, from the bottom of our hearts, you’ve touched our lives in ways words can scarcely capture.
I am writing to nominate Joel Hernandez, RN, for the DAISY Award, in recognition of the extraordinary compassion, skill, and unwavering dedication he has shown to my family during one of the most challenging times of our lives. This nomination stems from a deeply heartfelt reunion that reminded me just how profound the impact of a truly exceptional nurse can be.

It all began back in 2025, when my dear mother was first intubated and fighting for her life in the ICU at Kaiser. Those early days were a blur of fear and uncertainty, as we navigated the terrifying reality of her critical condition. Joel was her nurse during that pivotal time, and he wasn’t just performing his duties; he was a beacon of hope and humanity. He took the time to explain every procedure with patience and clarity, held her hand through moments of pain, and treated her not as a patient, but as a cherished individual with a story and a spirit worth fighting for. His gentle demeanor and expert care were instrumental in stabilizing her and giving our family the strength to hold on. We left that initial stay grateful for his role in her survival, but little did we know our paths would cross again.

Fast forward nearly a year to this past month, it’s been an unimaginably long journey for my mother, filled with ups and downs, hospital stays, and the relentless toll of illness. When she was readmitted recently, imagine our overwhelming joy and relief upon discovering that Joel was once again assigned to her care. It felt like fate had brought him back to us, a familiar face in a sea of uncertainty.

The moment my mother saw him, her eyes lit up with recognition, and she managed a weak but genuine smile, the first real one we’d seen in days. That simple, beautiful interaction brought tears to my eyes, a flood of emotion that spoke volumes about the bond Joel had formed with her all those months ago. In her vulnerable state, where words are scarce and memories can fade, she remembered him. That alone is a testament to the profound connection he builds with his patients.

Having walked this arduous path with my mother for so long, I’ve witnessed the full spectrum of healthcare: the good, the bad, and everything in between. There are those like Joel, who go far beyond the call of duty.

They anticipate needs before they’re spoken, offer comfort in the darkest hours, and remind us that healing is as much about the heart as it is about medicine. Joel embodies this rare excellence; he doesn’t just care for the body, he nurtures the soul. It’s clear to me that when someone like him steps up, it truly takes a village to support families like ours through such trials. And in that village, Joel is the steadfast pillar we all lean on.

Our family has been incredibly blessed with many outstanding caregivers at Kaiser, dedicated nurses, respiratory therapists, and doctors who have all played vital roles in my mother’s ongoing battle. But Joel’s return brought back a rush of those early memories, transforming what could have been a daunting revisit into a moment of profound comfort and reassurance. Knowing he was by her side again made us all feel safe, seen, and truly cared for. His presence turned the hospital room into a place of warmth rather than just clinical necessity.

Joel Hernandez deserves the DAISY Award not only for his clinical expertise but for the empathy and kindness that radiate from everything he does. He reminds us that nursing is a calling, and he answers it with grace every single day.

Thank you, Joel, from the bottom of our hearts, you’ve touched our lives in ways words can scarcely capture. I hope this nomination helps shine a light on the incredible difference you make.
