Knowing Chris was there, night after night, eased our fears just a bit and made our experience more bearable.
We have spent the last 31 days and nights at Maine Medical Center after our 18-year-old daughter was admitted with a traumatic brain injury, spinal fracture, and pulmonary contusion. She is recovering, and we have much to hope for considering how injured and sick she has been. Her nurses are calling her their Christmas Miracle. Many, many, many people have contributed to her care and recovery - including Surgeons, Doctors, Physician Assistants, Respiratory Therapists, ECMO specialists, Nursing Assistants, Pharmacists, Therapists, and most of all, Nurses who have cared for her day and night. Many of these nurses have been exceptional, and we cannot thank them enough. However, one - Chris Kurlanski - cared for our daughter for seven nights during her most critical brain swelling period after she was placed in a pentobarbital coma. When most doctors were discussing the high likelihood of mortality, Chris worked through the night to monitor and control her Intracranial Pressure (ICP). He showed us how small adjustments - a change in body position, a well-fitted neck brace, or a simple cleaning (spa time) could make her more comfortable and lower her ICP. His attention to detail was extraordinary. Those first hours seemed endless and were incredibly terrifying as a parent. Knowing Chris was there, night after night, eased our fears just a bit and made our experience more bearable. He even picked up extra shifts to maintain continuity of care. Chris talked us through everything and was amazing and tender with our daughter. We are grateful to so many at Maine Medical Center, but we truly think that Chris Kurlanski saved her life. Chris worked his ICP magic and gave her the chance to fight and to live.
