I was admitted to the Highlands Ranch Hospital from the ED for pneumonia and fluid between my lungs and chest wall. During my first two days, I received compassionate care from nurses and the care team. The morning nurse assigned for my care called out sick. Marieke was given the additional responsibility to tend to my care needs.

Marieke quickly reviewed my chart and determined that I had not received my morning medications. She immediately took my vitals and listened to my heart and lungs. My heart rate was dangerously high, so Marieke called in the Rapid Response Team. The doctor on duty collaborated closely with Marieke, and it was obvious he respected her competencies, knowledge, and compassion.

Marieke was active, engaged, and ensured my safety and well-being were paramount. My husband and I celebrated our 72nd wedding anniversary in the hospital. Marieke made sure I was showered and "put together" for when my husband and son arrived. She communicated with all the nurses and care team on duty and coordinated having each team member write a wonderful "Happy Anniversary" message on a card for him and me.

Additionally, a group of six nurses and team members visited our room (led by Marieke) to celebrate in person (we were able to take a group photo). Lastly, Marieke arranged for a special dessert to be delivered to us. Marieke made our 72nd wedding anniversary memorable and special. It was very clear to me that Marieke embodies the essence of the DAISY Award.
