Her empathy, care, and ability to connect and make sure her patient is informed, comfortable, and empowered were amazing.
I do not have adequate words to describe the amazing care my daughter and family received from Carly during a very scary time.
To preface the situation, our teenage daughter had passed out, and we found out she was not only pregnant but estimated to be 38 weeks pregnant. We ended up in L&D triage, where she needed a blood transfusion, iron infusions, and a full prenatal work-up. She was ultimately admitted, and Carly was her nurse.
From the first moment Carly met our daughter, she treated her as her own. She ensured our daughter was 100% comfortable with everything that was happening. Carly made sure that she was educated on all of her options and rights throughout every step of the process. Not once did she look at her like a 17-year-old who made a huge mistake or had questionable morals. She never looked at my husband and me with questioning eyes. She made sure we knew our daughter and her baby were safe and in good hands, and reassured us as parents that we were doing great.
Our daughter ended up being discharged the next evening. Carly stayed late, after her shift, to complete discharge education for her as Carly knew she was very comfortable and relaxed with her.
We were not sure when the baby would come, and with little time to prepare and being worried about our daughter, we all hoped that maybe Carly would be there when she went into labor. Bridget ended up being scheduled for induction less than a month later at 6 am. We showed up at 5:45 am and ended up being sent home due to the high volume of women who arrived in active labor. We returned around 10:30 am, and we were ecstatic to see Carly come into the room and say, “Hi! I will be your nurse today!”
Our daughter, who was already nervous and worried and still processing everything from the last couple of weeks, immediately smiled and relaxed.
Once again, Carly explained everything to her and us, ensuring she knew that she was in control of what was done to her and the baby and by whom. Carly ensured she was comfortable and understood every step of the process. As labor progressed, she made sure she was comfortable and had everything she needed. Carly made sure we had everything we needed to. Carly ensured a great handoff of care to the night nurse, who continued Carly’s great care.
Our daughter had a long labor, about 24 hours, and had a new nurse the next day. Carly was assigned to another patient, but popped in to check on her. Thankfully, as she was ready to push, Carly was available to come be the baby’s nurse during the birth. She showered her son and herself with support, encouragement, and love. She assisted our nurse and the doctor in knowing what worked for our daughter. She took great care of mother and the baby.
She is an amazing nurse. Her empathy, care, and ability to connect and make sure her patient is informed, comfortable, and empowered were amazing. The entire staff was amazing, but Carly helped all of us through a scary, chaotic, and emotional time. She is our angel.
I work at MCSA and know firsthand the challenges of frontline patient caregivers in today’s healthcare climate. I know MCSA is an amazing hospital, but I was still worried because it was my daughter and grandson. Carly eliminated my fears and stress and treated her patient like her own, a principle I have tried to live by in my 25 years of patient care.
Thank you, Carly! Know you’re a gifted nurse. You’re a blessing to your patients.
