Their kindness and solidarity during moments of hardship are a true reflection of the heart of nursing.
Story #1:

The Primary Care Clinic (PCC) team at Hughes Spalding exemplifies the essence of teamwork, compassion, and innovation in nursing. Under the kind and steady leadership of Assistant Nurse Manager Jenn Roan, the team has built a psychologically safe environment rooted in respect, belonging, and shared purpose. Their culture of trust and collaboration allows every team member to thrive-both personally and professionally-and ensures that every patient and family receives compassionate, high-quality care.

The PCC team consistently goes above and beyond to enhance patient care and improve clinic operations. Together, they identified and implemented process improvements that significantly reduced patient intake time to just 21 minutes. They collaborated with Grady to gain access to newborn charts for patients seen at HS, allowing staff to enter patient histories into the EMR prior to appointments. This streamlined workflow has led to smoother visits and greater satisfaction for families and staff alike.

The team also developed a vaccine nurse visit process that allows vaccines to be ordered and prepared before the patient is brought back. This innovation reduced wait times, improved efficiency, and enhanced the patient experience. Each of these initiatives demonstrates the team's shared commitment to improving care delivery through collaboration and creativity.

In addition to process improvement, the PCC team has embraced new technology and evidence-based tools to improve patient comfort and care. They helped implement the use of virtual reality (VR) and reintroduced Buzzy to help reduce needle stick pain for pediatric patients, demonstrating their compassion and dedication to patient-centered care. They also seamlessly transitioned to the new Dräger transcutaneous bilirubin meter, ensuring that newborn assessments are more accurate, efficient, and comfortable for patients.

One of the most remarkable qualities of the PCC team is their adaptability and positive spirit. They have embraced new initiatives and workflow changes with professionalism and grace, understanding that each improvement contributes to better outcomes and experiences for patients and families.

Their welcoming and inclusive culture is equally inspiring. Numerous new hires have shared how supported, welcomed, and valued they felt from the very beginning. The PCC team takes pride in mentoring and onboarding not only new permanent staff but also CSO nurses, ensuring every team member feels a true sense of belonging. This commitment to inclusion and collaboration has fostered a strong, united team that supports one another both inside and outside of work. The PCC team also created the Primary Care Social Committee, which has further deepened their bond and fostered a strong sense of camaraderie and belonging.

The team's compassion extends far beyond their clinical duties. When a colleague experienced a traumatic life event that left her family without a home, the PCC team immediately rallied together to collect donations, supplies, and funds to support her through recovery. Their kindness and solidarity during moments of hardship are a true reflection of the heart of nursing.

The PCC team at Hughes Spalding represents the best of healthcare: compassionate, innovative, resilient, and united. Their shared commitment to excellence, teamwork, and patient-centered care has transformed their clinic and created a lasting positive impact on patients, families, and colleagues alike.

This team not only provides exceptional care but also exemplifies what it means to work together with heart, purpose, and humanity.

Story #2:

One situation that truly reflects compassion, teamwork, and dedication of our time involved a mother who was severely depressed and struggling to care for her children. When she came to us, it was clear that she was in crisis. She didn't have enough food at home and had no support system to help her meet her children's basic needs.

Instead of seeing this as only a medical situation, our team came together to care for the whole family. We made sure the children were safe, nourished, and comforted by providing snack packs and food vouchers so they wouldn't go hungry. We also worked collaboratively to connect the mother with mental health resources and community programs that could offer ongoing support.

Every team member played a role, whether it was providing emotional support, coordinating resources, or simply being present with empathy and understanding. The outcome was incredibly meaningful: the mother began receiving the help she needed, the children were cared for and supported, and the family left knowing they were not alone.

This experience reminded us of the true heart of nursing care beyond the bedside and seeing every patient and family as a whole. Our teamwork not only met their immediate needs but helped restore hope during a very difficult time.
