I would like to recognize an incredible interdisciplinary team, Nonie Igagamao, RN, Amy Harvey, Respiratory Therapist, and Hailey Nguyen, Charge RN, for their exceptional compassion, collaboration, and dedication to patient-centered care.
This team worked together to create a truly life-changing moment for a long-term liver transplant patient who had been hospitalized for over 200 days. The patient, who is ventilator-dependent with a tracheostomy, PEG tube, and significant mobility challenges, had not been outside in months. After receiving approval from the transplant team, Nonie, the patient’s primary nurse, took on the challenge of arranging a safe and meaningful trip outdoors.
With the expertise and support of Amy Harvey, the respiratory therapist, they carefully coordinated equipment, ensured respiratory stability, and together made it possible for the patient to experience fresh air and sunshine for the first time in over half a year. Once outside, the patient’s joy was immediate, overwhelming, and he even expressed that he didn’t want to go back inside.
Adding to this special moment, Dr. Anthony joined them outside to visit and encourage the patient, offering a beautiful display of teamwork and human connection beyond the hospital walls. Behind the scenes, Hailey Nguyen, serving as charge RN that day, skillfully organized the floor to ensure that patient safety and staffing needs were met so Nonie could make this magnificent journey possible.
This compassionate act not only lifted the patient’s spirits but also inspired the entire care team. Following this moment, the team has continued to make outdoor trips part of the patient’s care routine, improving his morale, engagement, and overall well-being.
This event is a powerful reminder that nursing and multidisciplinary teamwork are about more than medical care. They’re about restoring humanity, dignity, and hope. Nonie, Amy, and Hailey exemplify what it means to go above and beyond for their patients, working together to make the impossible possible.
