What stood out most was Brittany’s deep empathy and presence. She not only provided excellent clinical care but also recognized the emotional gravity of the situation and protected this mother’s moment.
Our NICU team supported an adoption involving a medically complex infant and a courageous birth mother. The infant had special medical needs, and the birth mother had made the deeply selfless decision to place her baby for adoption. During her time in the NICU, this mother was attentive and nurturing.

That afternoon, I was rounding with my team and had the opportunity to connect with Brittany DeBels, a pediatric nurse who was floated to the NICU and assigned to this family.

When adoptions occur in our unit, our protocol includes rebanding the baby to reflect the adoptive parents. During our conversation, Brittany shared that the charge nurse had checked in to ensure this had been completed. However, Brittany had made a conscious and compassionate decision to delay the process.

The birth mother, having just signed the adoption paperwork, had returned to the bedside to hold her baby one final time before handing him over to his new parents. Brittany explained that she wanted to honor this moment and would not rush the rebanding process.

I stood nearby and saw a room full of emotion. It was a profound human experience unfolding in real time. The birth mother held her baby with love, while the adoptive parents sat nearby, with smiles and patience.

What stood out most was Brittany’s deep empathy and presence. She not only provided excellent clinical care but also recognized the emotional gravity of the situation and protected this mother’s moment.

Brittany’s compassion, advocacy, and emotional intelligence in such a sensitive and complex situation exemplify the very heart of nursing. I am so proud of the dignity and thoughtfulness Brittany brought to this family's transition.

Her ability to see the human experience beyond the clinical task at hand was truly moving. This is an unforgettable reminder of the power of nursing and the difference it makes for patients and families.
