She takes initiative when the team needs it, anticipates needs without being prompted, and approaches every learning opportunity with purpose and enthusiasm.
Sarah Baxstrom is a dedicated nursing student who excels in the classroom and in her clinical experiences. One of Sarah's clinical instructors had this to say about her exceptional qualities: "I am proud to nominate Sarah for the DAISY Award in recognition of her exceptional clinical presence, compassion, leadership, and professionalism." Throughout the term, I have witnessed Sarah’s interactions not only with patients but also with her preceptors and classmates. In every setting, she consistently demonstrates maturity, curiosity, and sound clinical judgment well beyond the expected level of a nursing student. She takes initiative when the team needs it, anticipates needs without being prompted, and approaches every learning opportunity with purpose and enthusiasm.
What most distinguishes Sarah is the authentic way she connects with patients. One patient specifically shared with me that she felt “genuinely cared for” by Sarah and was surprised to learn she was still a student, expressing that Sarah “seemed like she was already a nurse.” This kind of response is not typical; it reflects Sarah’s innate ability to create trust, convey competence, and offer comfort in vulnerable moments. Her care is not task-focused; it is relational, intentional, and centered on the patient’s emotional and physical needs. Preceptors repeatedly describe Sarah as excellent, consistently helpful, and deeply engaged in clinical reasoning. They frequently comment on the quality of her questions, her eagerness to understand the “why” behind nursing decisions, and her ability to synthesize new information quickly. She is the type of student who elevates the learning environment for those around her.
Sarah’s leadership extends beyond patient care. Formally, she demonstrates commitment to the profession through her active involvement in Delta, which embodies the principles of service, scholarship, and leadership. Informally, Sarah leads by example. She supports her classmates by offering thoughtful suggestions, helping them navigate clinical expectations, and sharing strategies that build confidence and competence. Her strong background as a CNA provides her with a level of comfort and situational awareness that not only enhances her own performance but also positively influences her peers. In summary, Sarah stands out as an exceptional nursing student whose blend of compassion, professionalism, leadership, and clinical excellence embodies the true spirit of the DAISY Award. She cares deeply, learns actively, leads authentically, and consistently enriches the experience of patients, classmates, and staff. It is without hesitation that I enthusiastically nominate her for this recognition.
