Casey balanced expert clinical skill with deep compassion in a way that few people can.
I am a NICU nurse, and I was responding to a delivery call when I witnessed Casey provide extraordinary, unforgettable care during one of the most critical moments a family can experience. This was a stat C-section for a prolapsed cord - a true medical emergency where seconds matter. As I moved down the hallway toward the OR, the scene unfolding in front of me immediately stood out. The mother was being rushed back to her bed, and Casey was physically in the bed with her, positioned between her legs, with her hand inside the patient holding the umbilical cord to protect the baby’s life while they moved toward the operating room. The mother was terrified. She was panicking, convinced her baby was going to die. And yet, in the middle of this high-stress, life-or-death situation, Casey never wavered.
While maintaining the cord and managing the emergency, she gave the mother her full presence and unwavering reassurance. She spoke calmly and continuously, saying things like: “Everything is going to be okay. We are doing everything we can. We are going to take great care of you and your baby. The NICU team is here. I can feel your baby’s heartbeat through the cord. He’s okay. We’re going to get him out.” Watching this unfold was incredibly moving. Casey balanced expert clinical skill with deep compassion in a way that few people can. She was doing something physically demanding, invasive, and critical, yet never lost sight of the human being in front of her who was scared and vulnerable. She made sure that the mother did not feel alone for a single second. As a nurse, I was profoundly impacted by what I witnessed. Casey exemplified everything the DAISY Award stands for: courage, skill, selflessness, and genuine compassion. Her actions not only helped save a baby’s life but also provided immeasurable comfort to a mother in one of the most terrifying moments of her life. I will never forget the care she provided that day.
