While getting ready for my son's 8th birthday party, he started having abdominal pain. It only became more severe, so we ended up at OLOL Women's and Children’s ER. Next thing we know, it's been confirmed that it’s appendicitis, and he needs emergency surgery. The heartbreak that came over my son’s face, realizing he’d miss his big party and spend his birthday in the hospital, was something no mother should ever have to see. We were promptly brought to the OR and, before you know it, were in a room on the pediatric unit.

As soon as we get to the room, I see a Happy Birthday banner on his door. Once I walked in, tears started to form as I saw streamers hanging from the ceiling, a dinosaur balloon on its IV pole, another “Happy Birthday” banner on its wall, and a present waiting for it. Natalie and Kenzie had decorated his entire room while he was in surgery, and he could not believe his eyes when he woke up and saw it! But the kindness didn't end there; our night nurse, Carlie, also went above and beyond to make his day special. When he woke up the next morning, his birthday morning, Carlie had more presents and a hand-drawn “Happy Birthday” sign waiting for him! Not only did we receive exceptional care from these 3 ladies, but they have truly touched our hearts. I am also a bedside RN for FMOLHS, and I have never been prouder to be a part of this incredible profession. I know it's not easy to take time like that out of your shift, but these nurses made sure my son felt special and brought a smile to his face during one of the saddest days of his life. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you! Never forget the lives you touched that day, because we will never forget the three of you.
