She laughed with us, connected with us, and reminded us that there were still moments of light even in the middle of such a heavy experience.
My sister was in the ICU, going through severe alcohol withdrawal and detox. It was frightening, chaotic, and heartbreaking to witness someone we love so much in that state. During moments of agitation and confusion, when she didn’t fully understand what was happening, Thy never once treated her with judgment. She treated my sister like a human being who deserved dignity, respect, and compassion.

What stood out most was the way Thy protected my sister’s dignity and autonomy, even when she wasn’t fully aware of what was going on. She was incredibly thoughtful about honoring my sister’s wishes and making sure we weren’t put in situations that could damage our trust with her once she recovered. They understood that addiction and withdrawal can create moments that families and patients later struggle to reconcile, and she actively helped protect our relationship with my sister through it all.

She listened deeply to us as a family and took time to talk with us about what was happening both physically and mentally during detox. In the middle of a situation that felt overwhelming and uncertain, she helped us understand what we were seeing and gave us something we desperately needed: hope.

Beyond her incredible medical care, Thy brought humanity into a very clinical and intense ICU environment. She laughed with us, connected with us, and reminded us that there were still moments of light even in the middle of such a heavy experience. She helped us remember to see every small step forward as great progress.

At the end of a long stretch of shifts, I made her friendship bracelets because we discovered we were both Taylor Swift fans and even shared the same favorite color, blue. It felt like a small way to say thank you for the way she had shown up for my sister and for our family. But the truth is, what Thy gave us that week was far greater than anything we could give in return.

She treated my sister with dignity when she was at her most vulnerable, advocated for her when she couldn’t advocate for herself, and cared for our family in a way we will never forget. Nurses like Thy remind families that medicine is not just about treating a condition, it is about protecting the dignity of the person inside the hospital room.

During a week when my sister was at her most vulnerable, Thy saw her fully and cared for her with compassion, wisdom, and respect. Our family will always be grateful that she was the nurse who showed up for my sister when she needed it most, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of recognition for the heart she brings to her work.
