As the interaction continued, it became clear that Allison’s presence helped ease the patient’s distress and made them feel safe, heard, and respected.
I would like to nominate Allison Coleman, a PACU recovery nurse on W2 at OSU East, for the DAISY Award. I am Allison’s coworker, and I had the opportunity to witness her provide truly exceptional, compassionate nursing care.
Allison was recovering a patient after an endoscopy. The patient has a history of sexual abuse and became triggered during the procedure, arriving in recovery extremely distressed. Allison immediately recognized the patient’s emotional needs and responded with patience, empathy, and unwavering support. She took her time, listened carefully, and created a safe, calm environment for the patient during a very vulnerable moment.
The patient was extremely responsive to Allison’s approach and expressed how happy and grateful they were for the level of comfort and understanding she provided. As the interaction continued, it became clear that Allison’s presence helped ease the patient’s distress and made them feel safe, heard, and respected. The patient’s response reflected the meaningful impact Allison had on their recovery experience.
After the patient was discharged, Allison went a step further by proactively contacting the help desk and EPIC support to explore whether there was a way to add a chart flag indicating the patient’s preference for female staff only. This demonstrated Allison’s strong advocacy for patient autonomy, safety, and trauma-informed care—extending her concern beyond the immediate encounter to help protect the patient in future healthcare interactions.
Allison consistently embodies the values of empathy, advocacy, and excellence in nursing practice. She is deeply committed to her patients and to improving their experience in meaningful ways. I believe she truly represents the spirit of the DAISY Award and is highly deserving of this recognition.
