What has meant so much to me is that her enthusiasm is evident, comments like, 'I am in love with this project,' truly reflect her passion not just for the topic, but for student success.
Dr. Sullivan has truly served as an exceptional role model and mentor for professional nursing throughout my DNP journey at Upstate. As my DNP project mentor, she has guided me through what initially felt like a very daunting and, at times, overwhelming process, especially during the many pivots and refinements my project required. She has a remarkable ability to make complex expectations feel manageable and structured, helping me break down large tasks into achievable steps. When I felt confused or discouraged, she consistently provided clarity, reassurance, and direction, keeping me moving forward. Her steady encouragement and belief in my ability to succeed made a significant difference in my confidence as a DNP student. What makes her mentorship even more meaningful is our shared interest in hospice and palliative care. She has taken a genuine interest in my research, offering thoughtful insight and guidance that reflects both her expertise and her passion for the field. Her mentorship has not only strengthened my project but has also shaped my growth as a future advanced practice nurse and nurse leader.
Dr. Sullivan consistently demonstrates genuine enthusiasm for teaching, learning, and nursing in a way that is both motivating and uplifting. In her feedback on different portions of my DNP project, she is always looking for ways to help me strengthen and refine my work, pushing me to think deeper while still being incredibly supportive. What has meant so much to me is that her enthusiasm is evident, comments like, 'I am in love with this project,' truly reflect her passion not just for the topic, but for student success. That level of excitement is contagious. It makes the long hours of research and revisions feel purposeful and rewarding. Her energy, positivity, and commitment to excellence inspire me to hold myself to a higher standard and to stay engaged in the work, even when it feels challenging.
Dr. Sullivan consistently demonstrates genuine interest in and respect for her students. She takes the time to truly listen, valuing our ideas and perspectives while helping us refine and strengthen them. Throughout my DNP project, I have always felt that my thoughts were taken seriously and that my work mattered. Even when offering constructive feedback, she does so in a way that is encouraging and growth-focused, never dismissive. She respects the individuality of each learner and supports us in developing our own voice as scholars and advanced practice nurses. That balance of high expectations and authentic respect creates a learning environment where students feel both challenged and supported.
Dr. Sullivan brings so many personal qualities to her mentorship that have truly helped me grow professionally. She is incredibly caring and always makes time to answer questions or talk things through, especially during the more stressful parts of the DNP process. Her confidence in her knowledge - and in my ability to succeed - has been really empowering, particularly during moments when I doubted myself. She has also been very patient as my project evolved and required multiple revisions and pivots. Instead of making those changes feel like failures, she framed them as part of the normal scholarly process. That perspective made a huge difference in how I handled challenges. One of the biggest ways she has modeled integrity is through scholarship, especially guiding me through the IRB process. She emphasized the importance of ethical research, attention to detail, and protecting participants, helping me understand that rigor and ethics are non-negotiable in doctoral work. At the same time, she remained flexible and understanding of the realities of balancing school, work, and life. Overall, her caring, patience, high standards, and steady guidance have not only strengthened my project but also helped shape me into a more confident and responsible nurse leader.
Dr. Sullivan is consistently fair and unbiased in her treatment of students. She holds everyone to high academic and professional standards, but she does so in a way that is equitable and transparent. Feedback is based on the quality of the work and growth over time, not comparison to others, which creates a supportive and professional learning environment. What I especially appreciate is that she recognizes we are not just DNP students - we are also working professionals, caregivers, parents, and individuals balancing many responsibilities. She acknowledges the reality that we are juggling multiple roles and approaches mentorship with understanding and flexibility, without lowering expectations. That balance of fairness, accountability, and empathy makes her an exceptional mentor and leader.
Dr. Sullivan demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and consistently maintains open, timely communication. She makes herself accessible and clearly communicates her availability, which helps me stay organized and supported throughout the DNP process. We have had numerous meetings via Teams, and she never makes our conversations feel rushed. She takes the time to fully listen, thoughtfully respond, and work through ideas together. I especially appreciate that she will answer emails even on weekends, and not just when something is time-sensitive. That level of responsiveness and dedication truly means a lot and reflects how invested she is in her students' success.
Dr. Sullivan truly develops strong, collaborative working relationships with both students and colleagues. Even though she is not my grading faculty this semester, she still took the time to personally introduce me to the new grading faculty member to ensure a smooth transition. That gesture alone speaks volumes about her commitment to student success. She has also continued to stay involved in my project, offering feedback and guidance even when it is not formally required of her. Her willingness to remain engaged and supportive reflects her dedication, professionalism, and genuine investment in her students' growth. It makes the process feel cohesive and team-oriented rather than transactional.
Dr. Sullivan is truly extraordinary because her impact goes far beyond what is required of a professor or mentor. She consistently goes above and beyond, not because she has to, but because she genuinely cares about her students and their success. She has a way of making even the most overwhelming parts of the DNP journey feel manageable through her steady guidance, encouragement, and understanding. What has meant so much to me personally is that she has planted the idea of pursuing a PhD on multiple occasions. She sees potential in her students and isn't afraid to say it out loud. The way she talks about scholarship, leadership, and advancing the profession has made me start to see those possibilities for myself. That kind of influence is powerful. It's more than teaching; it's true mentorship. She is inspiring not just professionally, but as a person. She balances high expectations with empathy and understanding, which makes you want to rise to the occasion. Her belief in her students, her passion for nursing, and her commitment to the profession truly set her apart.
