Knowing the patient had been NPO for over two days and would not eat for several more hours, he went above and beyond by purchasing food out of his own pocket to ensure the patient’s comfort and well-being.
I have had the privilege of working alongside Johnny for several years and have personally witnessed his remarkable professional growth from a nurse resident into a true nursing expert.

Throughout this time, the unit where he works has undergone significant changes and faced numerous challenges. Johnny has dedicated more than eight years to bedside nursing, gaining extensive knowledge and expertise in direct patient care.

During periods of increased workplace violence and heightened stress, he consistently demonstrated leadership, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to safety. He played an integral role in supporting positive outcomes, often taking the initiative to de-escalate situations and advocate for the protection of front-line nurses and PCAs.

Frequently, he was the first to address concerning patient behaviors and to seek appropriate assistance, ensuring a safe environment for both staff and patients.

In his role as a charge nurse, Johnny consistently leads by example. He routinely rounds on patients and families to ensure needs are met, concerns are addressed, and questions are answered. His proactive approach, strong clinical expertise, and compassionate presence foster trust and reassurance during some of the most vulnerable moments for patients and their loved ones.

Many patients express deep gratitude for this kindness, compassion, and proactive nursing care, often sharing that they felt genuinely respected and cared for. I have personally received multiple DAISY Award nomination letters that beautifully describe his unwavering dedication to patient care.

A recurring theme in patient feedback is the time Johnny takes to carefully explain treatment plans and medications, ensuring patients feel informed and comfortable with their care. He is frequently recognized for his patience and gentle approach to difficult or stressful situations and is often described as “professional, attentive, and genuinely compassionate.”

Patients also remember Johnny as a true team player, someone who willingly steps in to assist colleagues with lifting, daily care, or any task needed, doing so with enthusiasm and positivity.

One particularly memorable patient shared a story of Johnny going out of his way to obtain food for them after the cafeteria had closed. Knowing the patient had been NPO for over two days and would not eat for several more hours, he went above and beyond by purchasing food out of his own pocket to ensure the patient’s comfort and well-being.

This act exemplifies Johnny's commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care that extends far beyond routine expectations.

Johnny consistently exemplifies the ICARE values and sets a powerful example for new nurses through his dedication and genuine love for bedside nursing. His commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care, along with his professionalism and leadership, makes him a role model for the entire team.
