At a time that was so hard for all six of us, they made the pain more bearable because the staff truly carried us. They could not have been better.
My mother checked into the CCU. She was very sick, juggling kidney, heart, and lung problems. My five siblings and I accompanied her to the CCU unit, where we met Pete.
He was so kind, loving, compassionate, and caring, not only to our mother but to all of us. He listened to us. He heard our concerns. He promised he would take care of her, and he did. We all felt better leaving her that night because we knew he was going to take great care of her.
We were so fortunate to have him for three nights. Each night, he gave us reassurance that our mother was doing well and receiving the best care. There was never a doubt in our minds. He made all the difference in our mother’s last week.
We are also very grateful for the other nurses, Therese, Renee, Meaghan, and the secretary, Jocelyn. I would love for all of them to be acknowledged.
Thank you, Pete, our angel for our angel mother. We will never forget you.

My siblings and I met Jessica. Our mother had been transferred from Floor 5 to CCU. Jessica worked days and was so kind, sweet, and patient with six children who were scared for their mother.
She answered our questions and addressed our concerns about our mother’s care. We had Jessica on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, Jessica was not assigned to our mother.
When I passed her, she said hello and asked if my mother was still on setting 14 of the ventilator. My sister and I looked at each other and said, “I can’t believe she remembered what setting mom was on.”
That moment made me realize how special the nurses in CCU are. They care for different patients all the time, sometimes only for a day before assignments change. We knew our mother had touched the hearts of the people caring for her.
We left each day knowing she was in the best hands. During the final three days, when we stayed around the clock, the nurses were incredible. They were sensitive to our need to spend every possible moment with our mother.
At a time that was so hard for all six of us, they made the pain more bearable because the staff truly carried us. They could not have been better. From warm blankets for our mother to drinks and sponges for her after she came off the ventilator, they helped us care for her until her last breath.
When I think of those days, I feel so blessed that our mother received the best care. Our mother was simply the best, and we are so grateful.

My siblings and I met Antoinette in the CCU unit. Antoinette was our nurse for the next couple of days. She cared for our mother as if she were her own.
She helped guide us in making decisions about our mother’s care. She was honest and ensured our mother received everything she needed. She helped us care for her in her final days and gave us confidence in the decisions we were making.
We asked for a warm blanket for when my mother came off the ventilator, and she made sure it was there. Antoinette was always attentive, ensuring our mother was clean and comfortable. She brought us lip balm and sponges so we could moisten her mouth, without us even asking.
She anticipated what my mother would need or want. She thought for us when we were too overwhelmed to think for ourselves.
When our mother was dying, Antoinette came in to check on us and see if we needed anything, even though she was not assigned as our nurse that day. What nurse does that? She sees situations like this every day, yet she showed such deep compassion for our feelings. It truly touched our hearts.
We know that our mother received the best care during her stay at Ocean University Medical Center. She was simply the best, and we are so grateful to the staff, especially the nurses who cared for her.
I will never forget them.
