This patient shared her appreciation and went on to express how impressed she was with Gracelynn, and that she was positive she was destined to be “A great nurse!”
"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." – Aesop
This quote describes Gracelynn Hoffman’s selfless actions today during clinical as she cared for her selected patient with hyperemesis gravidarum. I truly believe her plan of care for the day started when she received a less-than-glowing report about this particular patient. Shortly after, she sought me out and shared her thoughts and her plan.
As is typical with Gracelynn, she exuded nervous energy as she accepted this challenge. Within a couple of hours, she returned and stated, “I met her, and I just think she’s not feeling good at all. She’s very nice and super sweet.” I thought “Girl! You should look in the mirror!”
Throughout the day, I stalked past the room and could hear interactions between the two. Gracelynn checked on her frequently and continually provided words of encouragement and reminded her to call if she needed “Anything at all.” Gracelynn respectfully referred to her with a “Miss” followed by her name, and the patient referred to her as “Love.”
Towards the end of the day, Gracelynn stepped away and returned with a trinket she had purchased from the gift shop. It was a POCKET MOM-A-CODO! It included a small card with an uplifting poem. She was so excited and asked for permission before gifting it to this patient, with whom she had formed such a special bond.
After granting approval, I followed her to the room to listen privately as she timidly presented it to her patient. It was obvious that this unexpected gift meant the world to her. She thanked her profusely with a tremulous voice and then requested to speak to her instructor.
It was such a blessing to be waiting outside the room to witness Gracelynn literally skipping out of the room with such joy to come and get me.
"To give and then not feel that one has given is the very best of all ways of giving." – Max Beerbohm
This patient shared her appreciation and went on to express how impressed she was with Gracelynn, and that she was positive she was destined to be “A great nurse!” She finished by saying Gracelynn had made all the difference in her stay.
This is what nursing is all about. I could not be prouder or more honored to be a part of growing this lovely future nurse.
