This nurse leader, this Director, oversees 3 Departments and, over the past year and a half, has greatly transformed the culture within each: Med-Surg, the Emergency Department, and the Float Pool.
Maggie Haughton is not only a role model for compassion with action and exemplary practice, but a true force of nature. Maggie leads with conviction, confidence,, and courage. She engages and empowers her staff to act with heart and purpose.
Maggie has spent 25 years as a frontline leader in Emergency Departments, Med-Surg units, ICUs, and on medical flights. She is never afraid to jump in alongside her team and lead by example in the skilled and compassionate care she delivers. She makes sure her team is supported, as well as accountable for the care they deliver.
Maggie’s leadership consistently raises the standard of care and compassion on the floor. She has worked tirelessly to transform the culture of 2 of the largest nursing units in the hospital. The Emergency Department is the front door to our hospital, and the Med-Surg Unit serves as a welcome center to our community. She continues to focus on the culture and the quality of care that is expected and delivered to our community. She has worked tirelessly to recruit over 22 new employees, nearly all of the graduate nurses,, to help ensure that we have our own staff providing the care for this community. She is a strong, fierce, and relentless advocate for patient safety, as well as equality and recognition for her staff.
Maggie is a born mentor with an enduring impact on the nurses she works with. She inspires, coaches, and guides others with compassion, clarity, and purpose. Maggie promotes a positive and caring environment for her staff, who, in turn, feel supported and empowered. The integrity and authenticity in her actions build trust, compassion, and mutual respect amongst her team. This is reflected in her shift in culture, the recruitment,, and the retention of the staff within these departments.
Maggie is always supportive and proactive when her nurses see opportunities to further their professional goals. She is actively engaged in projects and nursing initiatives within and outside, including serving on the board of the Mohawk Valley Nurses Association and as a Clinical Nursing Instructor for FMCC.
