She talked my daughter through the monitors, the blood pressure cuff, the mask, and everything else with patience and creativity, turning potentially scary moments into manageable, even interesting, ones.
I would like to nominate Nurse Becky for the DAISY Award for the truly exceptional care she provided to my daughter during her recent surgery. What could have been an overwhelming and frightening morning for a young child instead became an adventure to go see Santa Claus at the North Pole when she went off to sleep. Becky’s professionalism, compassion, and dedication to her pediatric patients and their families put us at ease. From the moment she introduced herself to us, Becky set a tone of warmth and confidence that immediately put both my wife and me at ease. She didn’t rush, didn’t treat the preoperative checklist as a formality, and didn’t make us feel like we were just the next case on the schedule. Instead, she took her time listening to us, and it made all the difference. She spoke directly to K, kneeling beside her, explaining what would happen in simple, age-appropriate terms without ever being condescending or dismissive. Every step was described gently, clearly, and honestly. You could see K’s shoulders relax with each explanation, and for the first time that morning, she stopped clinging to me and started asking Becky questions. Becky answered every single one as though she were talking to her own child.

What stood out most was how naturally she fulfilled a role often handled by Child Life specialists. There was no need to call in anyone else. Becky was all the support my daughter needed. She had an incredible way of breaking down unfamiliar medical equipment and processes so that they no longer felt threatening. She talked my daughter through the monitors, the blood pressure cuff, the mask, and everything else with patience and creativity, turning potentially scary moments into manageable, even interesting, ones. My daughter trusted her almost instantly, and that trust changed the entire trajectory of our morning. While caring for my daughter, Becky never forgot about us as parents. She explained what she was doing, why she was doing it, and what would happen next so thoroughly that there were no unanswered questions left hanging in the air. She recognized how anxious we were—even as we tried to hide it—and she responded with clarity and reassurance. She anticipated concerns we hadn’t even had the chance to voice yet. When emotion crept in, she handled it with kindness and understanding rather than impatience. It is not often that you encounter someone who can keep a clinical process so smooth while still maintaining such a human touch.

By the time my daughter was taken back to surgery, we all felt prepared, supported, and genuinely cared for in a way that is hard to put into words. Becky’s presence set the tone for the entire surgical experience, and I cannot overstate how grateful we are for her skill, empathy, and unwavering professionalism. Becky is exactly the kind of nurse the DAISY Award was created to celebrate. She is not only exceptional in clinical practice but also exceptional in spirit, compassion, and connection. She made a lasting impact on our family, and we are forever thankful.
