It is with great admiration and gratitude that I nominate Alice, our exceptional dialysis nurse, for the DAISY Award. Alice is a shining example of compassion, professionalism, and selfless dedication in everything she does. Each day, Alice “hits the floor running” and goes far beyond her expected responsibilities. Even before settling in for her own shift, Alice makes time to check in on the MedSurg floor—often still in her coat—to review their census and assess their staffing needs. Her commitment to teamwork is evident as she ensures the well-being and support of colleagues across multiple units.

As Alice’s shift begins early each morning, she reviews the inpatient census to identify any potential dialysis patients and plans her day to ensure she can prioritize their care. Without hesitation, Alice jumps right in, assisting the ICU by helping the night shift with baths, running labs, and offering support wherever needed—even before being asked. Although we try to share the wealth by having several staff rotate through floating, Alice often will say, “I will just stay. I am sure the others are busy, and I am already in the groove”.

Her willingness to float across the hospital, always with a cheerful attitude and a welcoming smile, brings reassurance to her coworkers; everyone breathes a little easier knowing Alice is on the team. Alice has gone above and beyond not just for her colleagues, but for her patients as well. She once offered to accompany a confused patient with dementia during an ambulance transfer to a long-term care facility, ensuring a smooth and compassionate transition.

One moment stands out that truly exemplifies Alice’s heart: after checking in with staff on MedSurg and ICU one day, Alice learned that all units were stable. She then chose to sit with a patient who was actively dying—someone without family at the bedside—because she didn’t want him to be alone. Alice quietly cared for him and comforted him, ensuring he felt dignity and peace in his final hours. She remained by his side until he passed away, demonstrating profound humanity and empathy.

Alice’s dedication is widely recognized—she was awarded Employee of the Month and routinely receives compliments from staff and patients alike. She brings comfort and positivity wherever she goes. The relief and joy people feel when Alice is here is a testament to her impact, both personally and professionally. Alice embodies the spirit of nursing and the values of the DAISY Award in every interaction. We are incredibly fortunate to have her on our team, and she is deeply deserving of this honor.
