His composure de-escalated my anxiety and restored my trust in the care team.
It is with deep gratitude and sincere admiration that I nominate Nurse Steve from the MICU for the DAISY Award. From the moment I arrived at the unit, overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted, Nurse Steve demonstrated what true compassion in nursing looks like. As a veteran who has experienced service-connected trauma, he immediately connected with both my brother and me in a way that felt personal, respectful, and profoundly healing. I had just undergone knee replacement surgery and traveled from Washington, D. C, to Philadelphia after learning that my brother was in intensive care. I arrived anxious, physically depleted, and admittedly making urgent demands out of fear and stress. Nurse Footit met me with calm, steady professionalism. He listened attentively, acknowledged my concerns without defensiveness, and addressed each issue patiently and clearly. His composure de-escalated my anxiety and restored my trust in the care team. The level of emotional intelligence reflects not only skill but also a passion for nursing. Most importantly, his care for my brother has been extraordinary.
My brother speaks only in a whisper, yet Steve always speaks directly to him, never around him, giving him his full time and attention. He kneels close, listens carefully, and ensures that my brother feels seen, heard, and valued. This intentional, patient-centered communication is a powerful act of dignity. I observed his patience and gentleness while feeding him pureed meals, which are not easy to enjoy. He watched my brother’s reactions, offered thoughtful encouragement, and even promised fine foods he might enjoy more. That small promise meant everything. It demonstrated advocacy, attentiveness, and commitment to comfort beyond routine duty. He ensures that my brother is clean, properly positioned, and comfortable. He monitors not just medical indicators, but emotional well-being. His sense of humor, appropriate, warm, and timely, lightened tense moments when physicians asked difficult questions. He created a safe and healing environment for both patients and family.
As a leader on the healthcare team, Nurse Steve models what veteran-centered care truly means. He understands the unique concerns, life experiences, and emotional needs of veterans. He advocates respectfully, communicates clearly, and collaborates effectively with the team, never losing sight of the individual in the bed. His passion for nursing is evident in every interaction. He combines clinical excellence with empathy, advocacy, dignity, and compassion. He does not simply deliver care: he builds trust and restores hope. With the deepest gratitude, I want to acknowledge that Steve thoughtfully coordinated my meetings with other members of the care team, professionals who provide devoted, truly phenomenal care to our veterans and who are equally deserving of recognition for their extraordinary service. The "DAISY AWARD" is the highest expression of gratitude I can offer to someone who embodies the heart of nursing. Nurse Steve exemplifies the best of the profession and is deeply deserving of this recognition.
