Haley, however, truly stands out. Her clinical competence, emotional intelligence, and genuine compassion in one of the most devastating moments of our lives were extraordinary.
Our family experienced the worst day of our lives. My father went to the emergency room early that morning with severe abdominal pain and vomiting. He had been battling terminal appendix cancer, and we initially believed he was experiencing another bowel obstruction. Unfortunately, the CT scan revealed not only multiple partial obstructions but also a perforated bowel. Hospice was with us in the ER when the doctor came in with the results. We immediately understood this was devastating news. Shortly after, the surgeon explained that my father was not a candidate for surgery, as it would not change his prognosis, and that he likely only had hours to a couple of days to live. In that moment, our world stopped.

Throughout this heartbreaking experience, Nurse Haley was extraordinary. She was attentive, empathetic, calm, knowledgeable, and incredibly patient. She carried herself with a warmth and steadiness that grounded our entire family. She treated my father not just as a patient, but as a person whose comfort and dignity truly mattered.

Because of the vomiting, my father was unable to eat that day, but he loved a good Coca-Cola. Knowing he had very limited time left. Haley went out of her way to search within the hospital to find one for him. When he finished it, she kindly offered to find another. That simple act of kindness meant more to us than she may ever realize. It gave him a moment of familiarity and comfort in the middle of unimaginable heartbreak.

She was equally attentive to our family. After we had been in the emergency room all day and did not want to leave our father's side, she thoughtfully arranged for a snack tray so we could eat without leaving him. That level of compassion and awareness is something we will never forget.

When discussions began about honoring my father's wish to pass away at home, Haley advocated for him with hospice to ensure arrangements were made quickly and smoothly. Because of her efforts and coordination, he was able to go home and pass away the following morning comfortably, surrounded by family - exactly as he wanted.

I am also a nurse within this organization and have had the privilege of working alongside many exceptional nurses throughout my career. I understand firsthand the demands of this profession and the level of care our nurses provide each day.

Haley, however, truly stands out. Her clinical competence, emotional intelligence, and genuine compassion in one of the most devastating moments of our lives were extraordinary.

My dad had struggled with serious medical issues for many years and had been in and out of the hospital multiple times. We have encountered many good nurses, but Haley was exceptional in a way that will stay with our family forever. In one of the darkest moments of our lives, she was a steady light. Our family will always be grateful for her advocacy, attentiveness, warmth, and humanity. We hope the organization recognizes what an incredible nurse they have in Haley. She made an unimaginable day more bearable and helped give my father the peaceful goodbye he deserved.
