Maria advocated for a patient who was coded and intubated and could not speak for herself. The patient did not have any emergency contacts listed, and the MD's covering thought the patient was most likely brain dead. The Bend Hospital had limited ICU beds available, and our hospitalists did not push further to send the patient for higher level of care. Maria did not want to give up on this patient so soon and felt that she deserved a higher level of care to assess further before ending treatment. Maria escalated the case to the Bend AOD/transfer center, and they reviewed the patient's case and ultimately accepted the patient. Maria went above and beyond advocating for a patient who deserved further workup. This was an extraordinary act of compassionate care, and I want to recognize her for her critical thinking skills and high standards of care.
