Marlena's unwavering commitment to patient-centered care exemplifies the very heart of nursing.
I would like to nominate Marlena McCalmont for the DAISY Award for the extraordinary compassion, advocacy, and clinical insight she demonstrated in the care of an elderly patient under her watch. Marlena was caring for an elderly patient who lived alone and was adamantly refusing discharge to a rehabilitation facility. Despite the patient expressing a desire to go home, Marlena noted subtle but concerning signs indicating that he was not fully ready for discharge. She observed changes that pointed to a potential clinical decline, symptoms that may have been easy to overlook in the rush to meet discharge goals. There was significant pressure from the attending physician to move forward with discharge. However, Marlena remained steadfast in her advocacy. She respectfully and repeatedly raised her concerns, stating that the patient's condition did not feel stable enough for a safe return home. Her persistence and professionalism ensured that the patient remained in the hospital rather than being discharged prematurely.
Tragically, the patient declined rapidly overnight and passed away the following day. Thanks to Marlena's courage and refusal to remain silent, the patient was not alone when he passed. He received the comfort, dignity, and support he deserved during his final hours, something that would not have happened had he been sent home. Marlena's unwavering commitment to patient-centered care exemplifies the very heart of nursing. Her actions protected a vulnerable patient from potentially dying alone at home and ensured that his final moments were filled with compassion rather than solitude. She is the definition of an advocate, a protector, and a nurse who truly makes a difference.
