His daily embodiment of integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve and in our workplace culture.
I am pleased to nominate Kevin Book for the DAISY Award in recognition of his unwavering integrity, steadfast commitment, advocacy for patients and staff, deep respect for colleagues and patients, and pursuit of excellence in every facet of his role as Nurse Manager at the BH Outpatient Clinic.

Integrity: Kevin consistently demonstrates honesty, transparency, and ethical judgment in all interactions. He upholds patient confidentiality and professional standards, even in challenging or high-pressure situations. For example, when faced with a difficult scheduling constraint, Kevin chose the transparent path, communicated openly with the care team, and ensured patient safety and trust remained central to the decision-making process. His integrity sets a daily example for the entire clinic.

Commitment: Kevin’s commitment to patients, families, and staff is exceptional. He goes above and beyond to ensure care is continuous, coordinated, and patient-centered, often coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to address needs beyond standard hours. His leadership on process improvements, such as realignment of nursing roles and responsibilities for the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) clinic, demonstrates his dedication to enhancing outcomes and experiences for those we serve.

Advocacy: As a patient and staff advocate, Kevin listens actively, validates concerns, and champions what is best for others. He mentors team members on effective advocacy, ensuring every patient’s voice is heard in care planning and daily operations. A notable incident occurred when he assisted and actively took the lead in the de-escalation of a suicidal patient in the waiting room of the BH Outpatient clinic, which resulted in a care plan that honored patient preferences while maintaining safety and quality for the patient and the staff.

Respect: Kevin models respect in every interaction—patients, families, and teammates alike. He fosters a welcoming, inclusive environment and demonstrates cultural humility in daily practice. His respectful communication helps de-escalate tense situations and build trust across the clinic. His presence reinforces that respect is fundamental to excellent care.

Excellence: Excellence is ingrained in Kevin’s daily work. He pursues continuous improvement, welcomes feedback, and implements evidence-based practices. He has led or contributed to initiatives, including organizing the first and second chairs for the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) clinic, resulting in measurable improvements in patient outcomes for depression and anxiety. His attention to detail, reliability, and proactive problem-solving elevates the standard of care and inspires others to strive for excellence.

Impact: Kevin’s combined impact—through integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence—is evident in improved patient experiences, smoother operations, and stronger team morale at Lebanon VA’s BH Outpatient Clinic. His leadership, whether formal or informal, reinforces our organization’s values and mission.

Closing: For these reasons, I wholeheartedly support Kevin Book’s nomination for the DAISY Award. His daily embodiment of integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve and in our workplace culture.
