I would like to recognize Ann-Marie George, RN, on 2 East, and Sara Hann, RN, on IMCU. They were caring for a patient (CMO patient). This patient was on 3 West for many weeks and was sent home. The patient went home and became septic, was found down, and had to be intubated. They really did not think she would make it, and the family made her comfortable.

This patient is sweet but challenging due to her questionable capacity level. The patient does have terminal cancer and will not live much longer. The family friends took the patient’s dog and have been caring for the dog during all her hospitalizations. When she went home the first time, she was very excited to be reunited with her dog, which she had rescued as a puppy. Unfortunately, the patient can no longer go home and care for herself. The family friend wanted to bring the dog to see the patient, not knowing whether the patient would see the dog again.

Ann-Marie made sure the patient could go outside so she could reunite with her dog. Ann-Marie did not hesitate to step up and make this happen for this patient.  They videotaped the encounter and took pictures. Sara Hann took the photos because her family is the one caring for this dog. What an awesome act of kindness. Sara got the photos printed on photo paper. Sara and Ann-Marie placed them in frames in the patient's room. The patient was so happy!

It is the small things that count and do not cost anything. This is a great example of a true act of kindness!
