I was blessed to be accommodated by such a sweet angel of a nurse in one of the hardest moments of my life.
I had recently found out that my unborn child had many heart defects and had to make the difficult and heartbreaking decision to terminate my pregnancy. I came to the labor and delivery department at RUSH after having terminated my pregnancy the day before to get induced and deliver my beautiful baby boy. Through such an incredibly heartbreaking and painful process, Nurse Alex held my hand every step of the way and helped me get through it. When I thought I couldn’t get through my contractions and get my epidural done, I remember I kept repeating, “I can’t do this”— to which she held my hands and said, “Yes, you can”. That simple gesture and words of encouragement got me through the toughest time in my life. She was so incredibly attentive and always made sure I had all the support and care throughout my entire stay. After delivering my baby boy, she took special care of him, from photos to handprints, memory boxes, and molds. She made sure I had every opportunity to really cherish my time with my sweet boy. Even during my recovery, she helped me every step of the way, from wiping me down, cleaning up my messes, and always reassuring me that everything would be okay. She accommodated every question, request, and need I had with the utmost care and kindness. I was blessed to be accommodated by such a sweet angel of a nurse in one of the hardest moments of my life. Hence, I would love to nominate Alex for the DAISY Award, and if I were to ever go through this situation again, I would choose her as my nurse in a heartbeat.
