The Mayo Clinic Emergency Department faced an unimaginable tragedy as one of their own arrived as a patient in cardiac arrest. A beloved coworker and friend was found unresponsive at home. EMS responded quickly and transported her to the ED, where she was met by a team of nurses and providers who knew her not just as a patient, but as a colleague and family member.

Despite their heartbreak, the ED team acted with unwavering professionalism, doing everything in their power to care for her in those critical moments. She had been down for a significant period of time, and though their efforts were heroic, she ultimately passed away. Over the following days, this team of nurses demonstrated what it truly means to be a family. They leaned on one another, supported each other both at work and outside of it, and continued to show up for their patients with strength and compassion. Their resilience and unity were profoundly moving.

The nurses later visited their coworker in the ICU and stood by her during the Honor Walk, a beautiful tribute to her final gift of life through organ donation. This selfless act, along with the team’s grace in honoring it, captured the true spirit of nursing. This nomination recognizes the Mayo Clinic ED nursing staff not just for their extraordinary efforts during an emergent and emotional event, but for their ongoing dedication to every patient they serve.
